Evoking a moment of standstill in everyday hectic life

Design Challenge

In every day life people are getting more and more connected through there digital devices, making them less connected to the real world around them. The challenge is to design an interactive working environment of the future for Schiphol, making people more conscious of their energy consumption and of their working methods in a highly dynamic setting.

 

  • SKALA was created by a multidisciplinary team of 11 students. This required a very dynamic way of working. Team leaders were in charge of there specific subject and all progress was monitored by a project manager.

  • Experiential prototyping is at the core of this project. Every week new prototypes, small and big, were created and tested in order to build towards the desired experience. Skala is the end result of months of prototype experiences.

  • SKALA intrigues the users with sounds, distracting them from their digital media. These sounds are made by Jacobs ladders. Creating them was a long iterative process in which material, spacing and shape had to be perfected in order for them to work.

  • The Jacob ladders perform different actions depending on your behavior. I was in charge of creating this behavior together with my team. Exploring the space will soon make you realize, the biggest reward comes when you stand still, take a breath and relax.

Project Outcome

Me and my multidisciplinary team of 11 students went wild on this one. In the course of 6 months we experimented with many different possibilities in creating the working environment of the future. SKALA is about allowing your mind a distraction. It is an interactive breakout space that provides the opportunity to come to a standstill by pulling people from their everyday hectic and digital life. It gives you the chance to start afresh, with renewed creativity and inspiration, in a place of transition such as Schiphol.

SKALA was exhibited for one week in the main hall of the IDE faculty. Its solution is based on micro breaks within our lives, improving efficiency in work. I was mainly in charge of the intended interaction scenario and Jacob ladder fabrication.
